Navy Midshipmen at Texas Tech Red Raiders

Recap | Boxscore

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Talk about a contrast in styles.

Record-breaking B.J. Symons and the nation's top-ranked passing offense will take on the No. 1 rushing team when Texas Tech faces Navy in the Houston Bowl.

Symons set an NCAA single-season record by passing for 5,336 yards, breaking Ty Detmer's previous mark of 5,188 yards in 1990. Symons passed for more than 400 yards eight times, including four 500-yard games and two 600-yard outings.

While Texas Tech is explosive, Navy is more methodical and will try to keep Symons off the field with its ball-control option attack.

Making their first bowl appearance since 1996, the Midshipmen boast a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in fullback Kyle Eckel and quarterback Craig Candeto.

Eckel has rushed for 1,178 yards, including 152 yards and two touchdowns in Navy's 34-6 win over Army. Candeto has passed for 1,107 yards and rushed for 1,022, giving the Midshipmen a pair of 1,000-yard runners in the same season for the first time in school history.

Symons averaged more than 50 pass attempts per game, completing 429-of-666 passes for 48 touchdowns with 21 interceptions. The Red Raiders have five receivers with at least 68 receptions and three with more than 900 yards. Wes Welker led Texas Tech with 90 receptions for 992 yards while Carlos Francis caught 69 passes for 1,087 yards.

The Red Raiders do have a running threat in Taurean Henderson, who has rushed for 693 yards on 113 carries, an average of 6.1 yards per carry. Henderson grabbed 69 passes out of the backfield, a Texas Tech record for a sophomore, and is averaging 101.8 all-purpose yards per game.

Texas Tech (7-5) dropped its final two regular-season games to Texas and Oklahoma and will be making its fourth straight bowl appearance. The Red Raiders snapped a four-game postseason losing streak with a 55-15 rout of Clemson in last year's Tangerine Bowl.

Navy, which was 3-30 over the previous three seasons, won its first Commander-in-Chief's Trophy since 1981 and will be making its first bowl appearance since beating California, 42-38, in the 1996 Aloha Bowl.
