NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Willie Shaw scored eight of his 14 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes to help St. John's rally past Boston University, 62-57, in first-round National Invitation Tournament play.

Shaw had two 3-pointers and a free throw in a 12-3 burst that erased a 46-42 deficit. Anthony Glover's follow shot with 5:10 to play put St. John's on top for good, 47-46.

Shaw added another free throw with 20 seconds left as the Red Storm went 6-for-6 from the line in the final 33 seconds to hold the Terriers at bay.

St. John's (17-13) becomes the fourth Big East Conference school to advance and will face Virginia in second-round play.

Marcus Hatten scored 12 points and Elijah Ingram contributed nine for St. John's, which was relegated to its 27th NIT appearance after Thursday's loss to Boston College in the Big East quarterfinals.

The Red Storm were outshot and outrebounded, but they committed just five turnovers and cashed in at the foul line. St. John's went 23-of-31 from the stripe, while the Terriers were just 12-of-17.

Rashad Bell netted 18 points and Chazz Carr added 10 for the Terriers (20-11), who lost to Vermont in the America East finals.
