RICHMOND, Virginia (Ticker) -- Different location, same result.

Rob Sanders scored 16 points and Donnie McGrath added 13 as Providence defeated Richmond, 67-49, in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament.

It marked the Friars' second victory of the season over the Spiders. In December, they routed Richmond, 84-55, in Providence.

In this one, the Friars (17-13) held the Spiders to 29 percent shooting from the field (18-of-62).

Jamaal Scott scored 17 points, the only player in double figures for Richmond (15-14), which closed Jerry Wainwright's first year as coach with a winning record. Last season, the Spiders reached the quarterfinals of the NIT.

All five Providence starters reached double figures as Ryan Gomes, Marcus Douthit and Sheiku Kabba all scored 10 points. Gomes also grabbed 10 rebounds.

After building a 31-20 advantage at the intermission, the Friars built their lead to 51-33 with 10:32 remaining. The Spiders pulled within 56-47 on Jeff Myers' 3-pointer with 4:39 remaining, but got no closer as Patrick O'Malley missed a 3-pointer on Richmond's next possession.

Providence, which shot 47 percent (23-of-49), will take on College of Charleston, a winner over Kent State, in the first round.
