7:30 pm
Recap | Boxscore

JAMAICA, New York (Ticker) -- St. John's hosts an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent at Alumni Hall on Monday for the first time since 1973 when it welcomes Virginia in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.

St. John's (17-13) usually plays its major non-conference games at Madison Square Garden, but the Garden is the site of the semifinals and final of the NIT. As a result the Cavaliers will visit Alumni Hall, which seats 6,008 fans.

The last time the Red Storm hosted an ACC foe was on January 17, 1973, when they routed Clemson, 87-59.

Willie Shaw scored 14 points and Marcus Hatten added 12 as St. John's advanced with a 62-57 victory over Boston University last Wednesday. The Red Storm held a healthy advantage at the foul line, converting 23-of-31 attempts.

Virginia (16-15) posted the first postseason win in nine games under coach Pete Gillen, a Brooklyn native, with an 89-73 rout of Brown last Wednesday. Gillen had been 0-8 in the NCAA Tournament, NIT and ACC tournament with the Cavaliers.

Travis Watson collected 29 points and 12 rebounds for Virginia, which never trailed. Devin Smith added 14 points.

The Red Storm are 6-0 against the Cavaliers, including a pair of routs over Gillen's teams.

The winner faces Siena or Alabama-Birmingham in the quarterfinals.
